WHAT IS RETAINED, AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Retained Firefighter’s will be self employed or in full time employment and with agreement from their employers to allow them to leave work in the event of an emergency call.

Following your initial training (2 weeks at Newtown) you will be issued with an Alerter, which will alert you in the event of an emergency. The Retained Firefighter will attend the station immediately from home, work, day or night

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS and TRAINING

  • You must be aged 18 or over
  • You will need to pass entry tests, and a Medical
  • You need to live or work near the fire station, as you have to get there within a few minutes of a call.
  • A flexible employer is essential, if you are to provide cover during normal working hours
  • You will need to complete a 2 week Initial training course at Newtown, followed by a further 2 weeks at Morriston (within the 2 year probation period)

 

PERSONAL SATISFACTION

Apart from the excitement, challenge, and great deal of satisfaction the job can bring, you will get the chance to join a close-knit, committed and well-trained team, which will build your self-esteem and confidence. After all, if you can cope in a real emergency situation, you will be ready for anything else that life may throw at you. You will also meet many people in your local community and earn their respect and admiration. Full training will be given in the use of latest high-tech equipment, and in other more general skills like first aid, which are extremely useful in all walks of life. As mentioned above, you will also get paid, receiving a basic monthly retaining fee for providing cover, as well as the following: -

  • Attendance fee for each time you attend the Fire Station when called
  • Turn Out fee for each time you attend an incident when called
  • Drill-Night fees for each weekly drill night
  • Payments for other duties such as equipment maintenance
